Human Trafficking in the Peruvian Amazon

According to reports from the State Department of the United States of America on human trafficking, Peru is a country of origin, transit and destination of this crime, therefore, regarding this risk, it is considered a level II country.

In 2017 and 2018 there were 2424 reports of the crime of human trafficking in the Public Prosecutor’s Office.

Although the Peruvian State has made significant progress in protection and prevention, with an emphasis on prosecution including the rescue of victims, the quality and relevance of legal and psychological assistance is still deficient.

Faced with this problem, the Human Trafficking in the Peruvian Amazon project, supported by USAID, aims to help reduce the incidents of human trafficking in Peru.

The project provides technical assistance and training to the relevant public entities to counteract this crime, it also promotes public awareness to avoid it and provides direct assistance to the victims.

Expected results:

• Increase in empirical evidence for the improvement of strategies against human trafficking.
• Public institutions being involved in identifying and combating human trafficking, knowing their roles and competencies according to current regulations and are articulated effectively.
• Capabilities of specialized prosecutors to counteract human trafficking, judges and other justice system operators strengthened to prosecute crime and protect victims.
• The issue of human trafficking positioned more prominently on the national public agenda.
• Victims of trafficking of Peruvian and foreign nationals are assisted in their main needs.
• At-risk populations, relatives and victims benefit from comprehensive prevention and reintegration strategies.
• There are Initiatives to increase the skills and income generation opportunities for at-risk populations.
